Fly Fish Guanaja Lodge

Oceanfront Lodge in the Bay Islands of Honduras

Guanaja, Honduras

The Bay Islands of Honduras are east of Belize and north of mainland Honduras in the Caribbean Sea. The islands exist peacefully like a country of their own, and Guanaja is the most remote, mountainous, and lush of all the Bay Islands, often called the “Crown Jewel” or the “Green Island.”

Whether you are new to fly fishing or combing the Earth for every spot permit and bonefish live, we are a highlighted experience on anyone’s journey.

The diving around Guanaja is one of the Bay Islands' best-kept secrets.  The reef is part of the Meso-American Reef, the second-largest reef in the world and one of the best places to learn, explore, and advance your diving skills.

It’s the activity that brings us to one of the most beautiful places on Earth, but sharing it with some of the most genuine people you will ever meet makes it memorable.

THE LODGE

A Boutique Lodge with charm and island vibes.

Fly Fish Guanaja is situated in the heart of Mangrove Bight, one of the few small local villages. The locals are friendly, the views are stunning, and the tranquil atmosphere is perfect for relaxation.

Accommodations are five oversized cabins, each with two queen beds, a quaint little sitting area, and bathrooms with hot water. Relax in the hammock on your private deck, walk to the intimate restaurant and the awaiting waterfront boats, or chill and fish on the over-the-ocean deck.

Our local chefs use only the freshest, locally sourced ingredients to create traditional island meals. With passion and dedication, they infuse each dish with their love for cooking, delivering a memorable culinary experience that will leave you craving more.

FLY FISHING IN GUANAJA

The flats in Guanaja are shallow and diverse, consisting of hard sand, turtle grass, and coral. While the main targets are permit and bonefish, you can also catch tarpon, snook, various species of jacks, and triggerfish. Expect to wade fish about 65 percent of the time and fish out from a boat the other 35 percent. All our boats are custom-made locally in Guanaja, specifically for the flats around the island. Our guides are friendly and highly trained and will teach you casting and the finer elements of Caribbean flat fishing.

PERMIT FISHING

Guanaja is an excellent destination for permit fishing enthusiasts. You can easily spot more than 50 permit fish daily, with plenty of opportunities to take a shot.

The island's shallow tropical waters offer a diverse fishing experience with mud, grass, and hard bottom flats. We typically fish the river mouth, lagoon, and flats on the island's north side, as well as the sandy beaches with wooden dock beams that permit fish feed. Additionally, the east side of Guanaja boasts ten small cayes with fishable flats where permit fish can often be found.

BONEFISHING

The average weight of bonefish in Guanaja ranges from 4 to 7 pounds, but some can grow as large as 10 pounds. You can find several large schools of bonefish surrounding the smaller cayes located south of Guanaja, and you can spot big singles feeding around the entire coast. It is a fantastic experience to look for bonefish, as they are abundant, and you can always see their tails. Guides are essential in Guanaja, especially since the best fishing spots are only accessible by boats. Although bonefish are big and plentiful, they are not easy to catch, making it a perfect challenge for genuine bone fishers seeking a challenge.

TARPON FISHING

In Guanaja, Tarpon fishing can lead to catching big ones on moving tides. Baby tarpon are a ton of fun to catch and range from five to 40 pounds. They cruise the flats and can be stealthy, but when a fly is presented in their feeding zone, they can't resist. Bow to the silver king, hold on tight, and enjoy the incredible power. You can also find Tarpon in small coves and pockets around the island.

Other Species

Guanaja offers a great fishing experience with various species to catch. Snook can be found in schools and popping top floaters under abandoned docks. Jacks are abundant and rip through the shallows at lightning speed. Triggerfish are sneaky but can be tricked with a well-presented fly. Barracudas are ferocious. You might also encounter random fish on the flats, like mullets, snappers, needlefish, and boxfish. Just be prepared for anything and enjoy the fun and excitement of fishing in Guanaja.
