Why We Come Back

Twenty years in, and Guanaja still surprises us with just how much we love it here.

People arrive for all kinds of reasons.

Some have had permit on their mind for years. Some come because a friend came home talking about Guanaja and would not stop talking about it. Others finally get the fishing group together, bring their family, or join a hosted trip without really knowing what to expect.

Then the week starts.

You get a few days on the water. You start knowing the names of the guides. You begin recognizing different parts of the island from the boat.

And somewhere in there, Guanaja starts to feel like more than the fishing trip you booked.

That is probably why so many people end up coming back.

It is not because every day is perfect. Guanaja has never been that kind of place.

It is still wild. Still remote. Still unpredictable enough to keep everyone honest. The fishing can humble you completely one day, and the next morning hand you one of those moments you will talk about for years.

That has not changed much in twenty years.

And we hope it never does.

There Is No One

“Guanaja Season”

One of the questions we get all the time is, “When is the best time to come?”

The answer is not nearly as clean as people want it to be.

We fish Guanaja year-round.

Spring and early fall tend to be the most popular. The weather is usually a little easier to read, people like the conditions, and those weeks tend to fill first.

But that does not mean the rest of the year is somehow the wrong time to come.

Rainy season gets a bad reputation because, yes, you can get rain. Sometimes a lot of it. A squall rolls through, the sky opens up, everyone gets soaked and twenty minutes later you are back fishing again.

If you are okay with a little unpredictability, the fishing can be insane.

Summer is another one people tend to overlook. They assume it is the quiet season or somehow not the best fit.

Far from it.

Kids are out of school, family calendars finally start lining up, and there is a ton going on in and around Guanaja. Summer is when the island really comes alive, including the annual celebration everyone here simply calls Carnival.

The water changes through the year too.

Tides sit differently. Wind changes. Fish move. Different areas start fishing better than others.

Even the things people sometimes think are annoying can completely change the fishing.

Sargassum is a good example. People see grass on the water and think it is going to be a problem. Meanwhile, that grass is carrying an entire little food chain with it. Bugs, bait and everything feeding on them start showing up, and suddenly the thing everyone was worried about is exactly what is helping make the fishing so good.

That is Guanaja.

You can come year-round.

There are seasons, of course. There are weather patterns. There are months that look different from others.

But the weather is always a little unpredictable.

and……so is the fishing.

That has always been part of it.

So Why Guanaja This Year?

There is always a reason to put a trip off.

Work gets busy. Kids have schedules. Fishing buddies can never quite agree on dates. Another year passes and somehow that trip everyone keeps talking about is still sitting in the “one of these years” category. Budget.

We hear that a lot.

And then eventually, one of those years becomes this year.

People finally get on the plane, make their way to the island and a few days later they are standing on the bow of a panga wondering why they waited so long.

That first trip looks different for everyone.

For some, it really is about permit. They have thought about that fish for years and want the whole week built around getting a shot.

For others, it is finally getting the old fishing group back together. Bringing the family somewhere completely different. Or just wanting a week that feels a long way from the normal routine.

And if you have already been here, you probably do not need us to explain why you might want to come back.

Guanaja has a funny way of staying in your head and your heart.

After twenty years, it still does that to us too.
