Fly Fish Guanaja Sponsoring Mangrove Restoration
As part of our commitment to a sustainable fishery for Guanaja Island, Fly Fish Guanaja has teamed up with Toby Jacobs, a biology graduate student specializing in forest restoration. We have created www.guanajamangroves.org to document our progress. Our hands on work is assisted by local and international volunteers.
Using Fly Fish Guanaja flats boats we are able to easily access the shallow saltwater environment where mangrove trees grow. To date we have planted over 21,000 trees. Why? The mangroves of Guanaja Island were largely destroyed by Hurricane Mitch in 1998 and have not recovered. The mangrove forests of Guanaja are critical to the regions environmental health. They are the foundation of a food chain and habitat that supports great numbers of fishes and wildlife species. They also protect the coral reef from siltation and they are excellent at carbon sequestration. Our goal now is to hand plant 100 hectares (247 acres) with approximately 400,000 mangrove propagules.
