Today I met a man named Richard, he was deaf. Richard was the nicest guy I have ever met. He used hand signals to communicate with other people and people could understand him. Richard was 79 years old and he was a happy go lucky guy. Richard is the bee keeper of Guanaja living in the small village of North East Bight, where he is from. He supplies the whole island with the honey he makes. He is also the most selfless person I have ever met.
After my hand driven discussion with Richard came to an end, Zach, William and I went to pick mangos and me and William got in a mango fight, it was intense. Then William and I got into a fight like brother do. I pushed him in the water then things got out of hand, we nearly pushed Zach in too. Today I believe was the funniest day I have had yet! Even though I will be bummed to leave, I am looking forward to the last day. I already know I want to return if not just to visit with my new friend Richard and communicate in sign.
Guanaja is the closest thing I’ve found to heaven. All the community service I have done over a couple have days have really changed my life. We planted mangroves in a mountain of mud which was a lot of fun. Brownie has been saying how much we help the community here, but I also see the community helping us, all this work will turn us boys into men.
I looked at the way I live my life compared to the way the people of North East Bight live their lives and it is crazy how little they have and how much they have to give.
