The Faraway Keys
Since arriving in Guanaja we heard legends of the Faraway Cayes. Bonefish schools of 1000, eating bare hooks, averaging 6 pounds, exceeding 10. We’ve been haunted by tales of permit that would break the world record if caught on a fly, permit over 50 pounds tailing in white sand flats. The tales were too grand to repeat without sounding like a liar and a jerk. Reports came back from lobster divers, snapper fisherman, military, and Miskito Indians, reports impossible to ignore. Reports that the legends were true and alive, just 160 nautical miles away.
The area has been known for drug running, so tourists have never occupied these islands, for anything. Luckily for us, the Honduran military and coast guard have started patrolling the area with a heavy presence, making it safe for us to be there.
We’ve set up a rustic luxury basecamp on a tiny island surrounded by 1000’s of bonefish and dozens of permit. Western Shelter yurts, gourmet island chefs, and the elite of Fly Fish Guanaja operate basecamp to perfection, and the fishing is the only thing we don’t have to worry about.
The Honduran government supplies our basecamp with 2 armed soldiers, further ensuring our safety.
We fly in a brand new Bell 407 furnished with rescue floats, flown by ex military working for VIP, the accomplished Honduran Helicopter company out of Tegucigalpa. VIP also flies for the show Survivor, and they’ve all survived.
Most importantly, we can now safely say, the legends are true. It’s a unique time in saltwater fly-fishing history to be amongst the first anglers to fish the Faraway Cayes and beyond. Each season the fishery expands, pushing towards Nicaragua, connecting some of the last dots on the map of saltwater fly-fishing discovery. All fish that have never seen a fly.
